Since 1995, the Historic Center of Ferrara has been included by UNESCO in the World Heritage List as an admirable example of a Renaissance-designed city that preserves its historic center intact. The canons of urban planning expressed there had a profound influence on the development of town planning in the following centuries. Since 1999, recognition has been extended to the Po Delta and the itinerary of the ancient Este "delights." The territory has thus been comprehensively identified as Ferrara, City of the Renaissance and its Po Delta.
Lying in the middle of the Po Valley, Ferrara presents itself with the intact atmosphere of its past, harmoniously married with that of its lively present. The most famous image is certainly that of its great Renaissance, the era of the splendor of the Estense court, which has left indelible marks everywhere: in the colossal project of the Addizione Erculea, in the imposing pictorial cycles of the 15th and 16th centuries, in Bastianino's Giudizio Universale and in the Palazzo dei Diamanti. From the Castle then depart the wide streets of the Addizione Erculea, of that expansion ordered by Duke Hercules that made Ferrara "the first modern city in Europe" in the Renaissance and that earned it recognition, together with its Po Delta, by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Others: Palazzo Massari with the permanent exhibition of Boldini's paintings, Palazzo dei Diamanti with the Pinacoteca used as a permanent exhibition of important art shows, Piazza Ariostea that annually hosts the oldest Palio in the world, Le Mura, an ancient fortified city wall that preserves its splendor intact.
